Tattered Cover Children's Literacy Project

INITIATIVE

The Tattered Cover Children's Literacy Project is a collaborative effort of the Tattered Cover Book Store and the University of Colorado at Denver. The project, initiated in January 1996 under the direction of Jody Paul, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and Tammy Kilgore, Project Manager for Internet Services at Tattered Cover, involves CU-Denver students and faculty in the ongoing development and enhancement of a web site dedicated to promoting children's literacy skills. The Tattered Cover actively participates in each phase of the project including students' classroom experiences.

The wonderful thing about this project is that it provides the opportunity for cooperative learning at so many levels and, at the same time, is committed to the development of a truly useful product.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

The Children's Literacy Project exemplifies a commitment on the part of both the Tattered Cover and the University to provide CU-Denver students with real-world experience in developing a working relationship with a business while designing and creating computer-based tools for promoting literacy skills among children. The result of this ongoing partnership provides a resource for children, their families, and their teachers as they explore the use of computers to promote literacy through activities that are simultaneously informative, educational, and entertaining.

Students:

About 30 students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering participated in the initial semester-long, project-oriented course. Currently, about 40 students are involved in the second phase of the project.

Community Partners:

Tammy Kilgore, Project Manager, and Roy Laird, General Manager, both of the Tattered Cover, actively participate in project direction and UCD classroom sessions.

FUNDING

The Tattered Cover Book Store provides the necessary resources to field the Web site. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Computing, Information and Network Services of the University of Colorado at Denver provide computers for web-site development and testing.
