Sample Annotation for Course Assignments

The following is an example annotation that follows the guidelines for course assignments. The artifact chosen for this example is the Annotations web page. Note that the following annotation labels the Title, Description, and Reflection components for clarity. Such labeling is not necessary, but is certainly acceptable.

Title: Descriptive Criteria for Assignment Annotations
Description: The following artifact describes the guidelines for structure and content of the annotation component of course assignments. It clarifies the meaning of the terms "artifact" and "annotation" then briefly describes qualities of a good title, description, and reflection. The document was created to aid students in preparing the required annotation part of assignments and as an aid in preparing effective professsional portfolios.
Reflection: The process of generating this artifact and that of sharing it with students helped me to realize that exercise of the critical thinking skills associated with reflection is largely neglected within the engineering curriculum. Similarly, I have gained a renewed appreciation for the need to encourage students of computer science and engineering to practice professional communication. This is engaged by the generation of meaningful titles and concise descriptions. I hope that experience with generating effective annotations, as encouraged by these guidelines, will benefit practitioners in preparing their professional portfolios.
